CHAPTER SIXTEEN
“Where were you last night?” Felicia croaks. She smacks her lips together and downs some water. “You missed everything.”
Till now we’ve been editing our VMAs footage in silence. The girly, giddy excitement of yesterday is gone. Everyone’s bleary-eyed, mascara streaked, and crankier than a toddler in desperate need of a nap.
“I had to do a thing.”
“What thing could be more important than the VMAs?”
“I was checking to see if Kendall needed help,” I tell Felicia. Not a lie. After I managed to get Tyler safely backstage to run his lines I actually did go searching for Kendall. I watched while she worked on her big client, the last performer of the night. It was so cool seeing the singer take the stage after that. She melted into the dramatic, intense performance and it’s crazy to think Kendall had a hand in that. Even People magazine named it one of the best moments of the night, and Kendall’s signature precision winged liner was right there in all the close-up shots.
“Hope it was worth missing out on the best night ever. Your VMAs vlog was like thirty seconds long.”
“No one stopped for me. But I spoke to Nora Twist.”
I still think that’s a pretty big coup.
“Nora Twist talks to literally everyone!” Jordan says with a laugh. “She’s too new to be a diva. She’d talk to a ferret if it was holding a microphone.”
“And you need to make people stop for you. Be a little pushy,” Felicia says.
I nod, but the truth is I never want to do that again. Standing there begging for interviews was far from glamorous; it was humiliating.
“Where’s Tyler?” Emily says coming into the sample closet. She tosses a purse onto a pile, but she’s about three feet off and it hits a sewing machine. “His manager called. Can’t get ahold of him and wants to know why there’s no arrivals footage. Either of you see him last night before he presented?” She leans back against the wall and rubs her face.
“Nope,” Felicia says. “He was MIA till the very last second.”
I glance at my texts. I shot him a quick one this morning to make sure he survived the hangover. But he hasn’t replied. Is he embarrassed to talk to me after saying all those things in the dressing room? He couldn’t have meant it. He was drunk and emotional over hearing his dad’s voice.
Emily sighs. “Where were you all night, Lacey?”
I repeat the vague story I gave Felicia. Emily says nothing, but I can tell she doesn’t buy it.
